From what I read in the past, It's not really an attack on uBlock (but I assume It could be part of it). 
It's a change from the current manifest format to a more secure one (which is probably a good thing). But uBlock depends on the old manifest and will be pain to upgrade. 
It's possible the uBlock situation,  sped up the time for this action to happen  to make them get behind on their youtube block algo (google getting far ahead while they try to upgrade)  or just give up.
