Are there any Google Home/Alexa-like speakers that are hooked up to ChatGPT or other LLMs? I’m getting frustrated with my Google Homes and would love to just have a real time voice conversation with ChatGPT via some hardware device fixture.

My Pixel phone recently allowed me to switch assistant from the crappy Google assistant to Gemini, so perhaps it's coming? Let's hope... Google Assistant is sooooo bad.

I did some research and experiments on the subject a few months ago. The reason speakers are so "dumb" compared to chatgpt is speed and price. They need to deliver most requests fast and most requests aren't complicated: "turn on this, turn off that, search this on internet". So they are just powerful enough to support mostly these requests. For more complex requests they would need to be more expensive since these requests need to be processed on device, OR sacrifice response speed and just make each request to the chatgpt API. I created a basic test speaker with a second phone and wired it chatgpt and wired some of my most used alexa requests like turning on a light or playing Spotify. The first day I asked a lot of "important" questions alongside my regular requests, but after a couple of days I just asked mostly the basic "put music, turn on the light" requests so... Speakers are good at what they do. I would probably buy a chatgpt speaker but I'd end up using it as a regular alexa.
