TIL Patreon's estimated revenue in 2021 is $160m, and Substack's is $11.9m. Anecdotal but I don't know anyone using Patreon yet know tons on Substack. Would have assumed less of a delta.

These patronage businesses take too big of a cut. I was with BuyMeACoffee when I started blogging and it was awesome that a lot of people wanted to support but between PayPal and BMaC I was getting like $3.5 of every $5.

Patreon has been huge for YT creators and more people watch videos than read essays so I guess that's the reason. I'm also surprised at the scale of delta though

I’m surprised at the delta but in the other direction. Very few people want to read. Subscription for long form text content is ngmi. Patreon is flexible in what and how you monetize.

I have paid multiple Patreon creators but I have never paid for a Substack. I think that’s the delta, lots of freemium on Substack, extremely limited freemium on Patreon.

Interesting, wonder what Patreon's 2023 rev is? and putting rate of rev growth between the two side by side? (Y1, 2, 3, etc.) Also, Patreon is broader use case for creators. I remember paying to enter a Discord via Patreon.

The real question is 2023. Post-pandemic I suspect that the creator economy is moving toward equilibrium instead of growth. A reckoning is coming in the form of a flatline. Not death but stagnation.

Patreon as I understand it, is not a well managed business CEO lacks vision and is distracted by bright and shiny, resulting in shipping nothing bc of thrash And lots of interpersonal issues like the discrimination lawsuit https://twitter.com/parismartineau/status/1617914123135881217

I think part of the problem are the products' user bases. Substack has a huge free writer base, and they think of it as just a platform to manage their free newsletter on. Patreon is used by people planning to charge their community and can be flexibly applied to any type of community. Much larger opportunity.
