The shark in formaldehyde is one of Damien Hirst's most famous works. The first one Hirst made was titled "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living" (note the title) and was made in 1991. 4/n

The 1991 shark has since decayed and has been replaced with a new specimen in 2006. Apparently these sharks don't last that long. So it's notable that an apparent 1999 shark (the first image I posted) was sold in 2018 or later (I don't know when, but it wasn't earlier). 5/n

We cannot prove provenance with physical art. There is no way of truly knowing when a piece was made and who made it. Hence the title in @jack's piece. Hat tip to him for turning this into his own art so quickly! 7/n

Context on @jack’s latest art  

We recently learned that Damien Hirst, a famous and controversial contemporary artist, dated several works to the 1990s, but they were physically created in 2017 

I think Jack’s point is that NFT provenance makes creation date clear to all
