Decided to write about my struggles to control the relationship I had with my phone. 

A few years ago, phone cases with straps became a thing, allowing people to carry them around, always ready to access..

I don't think it's a coincidence that the German word for it contained the word chain. If anything, it's probably the most accurate metaphor.
