oddly enough i was thinking about this in the shower yesterday. it's why i try to never use excerpts from works i haven't read. because often when you take the work in full, the excerpt comes to take on a much more different meaning than you thought it did.

in a sense marcus aurelius was a very lonely man and writing the meditations as a way to remain a good person despite having all that power, and lacking an equal (in wit, power etc). So with that framing it too reads different than what the alpha bros tell you about being a Strong man. I mean yes strong, but a very different meaning to the strong they think about.
