i'm personally quite torn about meditation apps bc it is easy to become reliant on them and further externalize our internal awareness which may counteract the intent of meditation in some traditions

Definitely a very good point. Like anything we can definitely build a dependency towards this sort of thing..

it's a fine line indeed! historically there's even debate about whether guided meditation is useful (as opposed to sitting in silence) and it is more accepted that they are an excellent way to induct beginners into the practice so it's perhaps a cultural shift like most practices will experience regardless i did want to call it out bc some folks "stop" at meditation apps and want to further progress their practice and may not know this might be one of the mini-roadblocks

Ah that's makes sense. Definitely a good way to be introduced but then it just becomes sort of a crutch so to speak and they miss out on the true experience of sitting in silence and meditation..
