End-to-end encryption backdoor will be voted in France in the next day or so. Signal is saying they'd leave the market before stealing people's privacy.

In principle on Android devices we would be able to install the APK ourselves without having to go via any store. How could they prevent that?

good news on this front, there’s still some sensible people left https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/03/win-encryption-france-rejects-backdoor-mandate

sadly similar debates are occurring in other countries incl. UK, France, and Denmark. Apple recently gave in to UK to weaken iCloud encryption. very worrying. problem is people don’t understand the benefits of encryption and the dangers of backdoors. so many misconceptions. https://therecord.media/sweden-seeks-backdoor-access-to-messaging-apps https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/02/cornered-uks-demand-encryption-backdoor-apple-turns-its-strongest-security-setting https://breachdirectory.com/blog/denmark-to-ban-signal-telegram-end-to-end-encryption-messenger/

Is it too much to ask for a country that has topless beaches and also respects digital privacy?

It’s very frustrating that people aren’t rioting in the streets over this. They do it for every fucking other thing in France
