Computer don’t solve problems. Kitchen appliances solve problems. Computers unlock human creativity by empowering software developers (who might then, among other things, solve problems). “Computers are bicycles of the mind” - Steve Jobs

Very glad he didn't end up re-naming the Mac to "Bicycle" though

Jobs' take on this was that computers would transform humans into "the most efficient animal". Curious to know if you have an opinion as to why the IT boom hasn't manifested itself in productivity data yet (e.g. TFP)?

Great context around that Steve Jobs quote! In that sense, brain computers, or rather neural interfaces, will be portals into the mind from which we will explore consciousness and the nature of reality.

I've always thought about it as: humans are special because we create + use tools. A hammer, wrench, and toaster are all tools built to do something. A computer is probably the most sophisticated, general purpose tool humanity has created. It's why I studied EE in college

Have their ever been other technologies that don’t solve problems, but allow humans to tinker in a new way?

Generally agree. Not clear how much longer it will be true. Software can now write software. Won’t be long before it’s also can design new computers on its own. Human creativity then becomes more of the creative director than the artist themself. That’s quite a paradigm shift.
