What you think is "selective memory", is a phenomenon whereby as you grow, you garner more knowledge which equates more memories. The brain isn't a built computer but functions more than a computer in many ways. Now, see your brain as a clock (this brain will house the memories). Clock never stops ticking. The brain constantly travel across all the memories stored in it both good and bad, it brings to your immediate visuals, the one of immediate need. Simply say, the brain mouses over everything kept in it at all times, as needs changes and life keeps evolving daily, there are things of recent importance kept in your brain you would be needing, these are the ones the brain will present to you when you query it. Querying your brain will make it mouse over everything it has and match your query with what it has if any match is found. For everything the brain keeps, there is a pattern to it, the memories you think n longer exists, are the ones you forgot the pattern you kept them with. You trace the patterns
