If you HAD to use just ONE metric to measure an engineer in your startup... what would you use? 😈

I'd measure based on whatever meaningful KPI or north star metric they moved at a company-level. eg, revenue, DAUs, retention, etc LOC / number of commits / other metrics like this are bad

I hear that - how do you think about balancing this with the agency of dev's who often don't have control over what they're building?

Depends on the size of the company but even at Google, managers should ensure that company-level OKRs are reflected in the tasks that individuals are working on. Good leaders should set good company goals/targets, and determine what gets worked on in order to move these needles
