For me, writing is an act that demands full attentionâI can't write while multitasking. In this regard, writing is like a leashâit constraints my attention but also gives it a specific direction if used properly. I therefore find that writing is a wonderful aid for learning. I internalise a subject better when I'm forced to write about it. As the literary critic Walter Benjamin has aptly written, âSpeech conquers thought, but writing commands it.â To be able to think well, I firmly believe we need to learn how to write well.

Beautifully said! I havenât heard that quote before but itâs very apt. It sounds like youâre describing a flow state leash almost, something that emerges based on the constraint you set for it. Often when we set boundaries on our cognition, we boost creativity and productivity as we are able to think in and around the constraints. Also, totally agree on the full attention requirements. Do you write in public at all? And thanks for sharing!

I first learnt of this quote many years ago from here: https://www.themarginalian.org/index.php/2013/04/15/the-writers-technique-in-thirteen-theses-walter-benjamin/ Agreed with your comment too about how constraints can actually complement creativity!

And I do write in public, but perhaps not as frequently as I would like đ This is my blog that is focused on digital art on the blockchain: https://mirror.xyz/buffets.eth

Cool! Thatâs a great name đ I was finding that too, personally, because I felt too much friction with the publishing act. Thatâs why I started using a digital garden, to reduce friction and save that for my longform writing Made a video about it actually!
