Smoking a cig and had an idea. Pretty sure we could get a lot more fruits per tree if we we selectively breed trees to minimize trunk/branches thickness and just focus on making fruit. Humans would provide the structural support, and plant basically becomes a vine. Photosynthesis MEV

“Funny” story, one year I was consulting with a small diversified farm which included fruit trees. I put together some fertility recommendations. Trees got charged up too much.. Their typical thinning work was a bit too much. At some point one of the growers slipped on a ladder and broke a bone. But yes in commercial apples everything has gone small trellised for speed of harvest, ease of spray, etc. Just need to be careful turning up the dial.
