Every time I log into my Wordpress site, I just hate it. It’s so convoluted and the number of clicks and decisions I have to make to post really sucks. I have over 20 years of posts so migrating elsewhere feels too big, but I want to.

What are you using in terms of theme and plugins? Block editor has come so far; if you happen to be using one of the classic page builder plugins like Elementor, it’s worth exploring whether you can get rid of any legacy plugins.

I moved from self-hosted to hosted with wordpress.com this year and consolidated all of my blogs into the one instance I have. I have zero plug-ins and only one theme, the one I'm using.

Ah well 😕 it does sound like you’re setup exactly how I’d recommend. Is it the WordPress(dot)com upsells that get in your way? Curious to hear what you’d change

The upsells really piss me off for sure, but I just want a much simpler interface. I don't even know where to begin. I don't want to look at every single toggle and option. The block composer is irritating to me. I just do not like the way it works.

I guess it's a trade-off one is forced to make when they don't want to maintain their own CMS and self-host, but I every once in a while I get kranky about that and now is one of those times.

Feel that for sure. Distraction free mode and single toolbar might help cut down on visual clutter. But fair to say WordPress needing to support enterprise requirements is friction against the minimal ‘just write’ workflow. And I know Matt Mullenweg would be pained to hear this feedback, it may be his biggest fear.
