I think one of the core tenets of nerding out — is a pure and unadulterated pursuit of whatever makes you excited and curious about the world — regardless of what the world thinks of said pursuit 

There is something beautiful about allowing humans to pursue the edges of knowledge without judgment

Pursuing whatever makes you excited and curious about the world is the most exciting thing to do. The especially difficult part is doing it without judging yourself.
