I agree with this. There are a lot of people working on this problem, I wonder if the energy wouldn’t be better spent designing systems that didn’t use this imprecise proxy.

Why do we want to verify humans? In 99.99% of the cases, it's just a bad proxy for something else: "is interesting", "can pay", etc. Where it actually counts, tests work quite ok (for example, the right to vote).

I think the missing link is establishing the status of the ID holder in law. This dictates the ability of anyone interacting to dictate terms or hold themselves out as a verifier.
