The domestic donkey, or donkey (lat. Equus asinus, or Equus africanus asinus), is a domesticated descendant of the wild donkey (Equus africanus), which played an important historical role in the development of human economy and culture and is still widespread (more than 40 million) in the economy many developing countries. A small number of donkeys are kept for breeding or as pets in developed countries. The donkey has been used as a working animal for at least 5,000 years.
