«Non ignara mali, miseris succurrere disco» (Virgil, Aeneid, 1, 630): No stranger to misfortune myself, I have learned to help the unfortunate (translation mine). It's my favorite passage from Aeneid in which Phoenician queen Dido welcomes prince Aeneas and his fellow Trojans to Carthage after Troy's destruction.

The meaning is that personal adversities and tragedy make us open our eyes to the pain of others and make us compassionate and mature fast. I can relate a lot to this statement 🙏
