When Trump won in 2016 I recall people being devastated and shocked, there was a physically palpable sense that something insane had happened. This time it couldn't feel more normal in general โ€“ most muted election of my lifetime.

the nation survived the last time -- so, with the economy feeling like it's not working for most americans, that's enough for most to look past his shenanigans and roll the dice also, my own 2 cents is that a lot of white male america feels like the system has been rigged against them and trump appeals to that

Nah he got fewer votes this time and fewer people over all turned out to vote. His die hard fans just turned out. But fewer white males in general turned out to vote I imagine because they felt neither candidate would positively or negatively effect them more than the other.
