at the value at the date you received / claimed the airdrop (i.e. tokens hit your wallet)

Yes both. At receipt and sale because if you sell them that is a taxable event. But on sale would be the difference between receipt price and sale price. I have seen token do an air drop before there is any value so the value you get is technically zero. Valueless coins. Then after they make the market for it. Value up
