At a minimum we can rule out nature being deterministic

Funny thing about free will that it’s impossible to act on the supposition that it’s an illusion.

The short answer is “no.” The long answer is “what the hell do you mean by ‘free’?” Free from what? Outside constraints? It depends on the constraints and the specific situation. Free from the laws of physics? Absolutely not. You always have choices. But choices always contain consequences.

We live in a complex adaptive system with an insane number of variables interacting to play out as emergence of our day and lives. Statistically does it make certain outcomes unlikely? Yes. But drive, determination, and luck can reshape emergence, which is why I believe free will is god’s greatest gift to man.

Have you heard of the fleas in a jar experiment? I don't know if it's true, my limited googling has proven unsuccessful. But allegedly, leave fleas in a closed glass jar for 3 days and then remove the lid - they'll never jump high enough to get out. (Might just be some motivational LinkedIn crap.)

IDK - it’s another thing in the too-hard pile along with god and gravity. Systems of accountability coupled with ways to forgive or at least move on matter This and the Atlantic article from 2016 that it cites are helpful https://thereader.mitpress.mit.edu/determinism-classical-argument-against-free-will-failure/

100%. Any say we think we have this is an automatic thought "claiming" the experience as its own. eg you have no say in the tendons and nerve activity in typing this, nor the precise angles required to hit they keys. Same for digesting, moving oxygen to bloodstream, hearing, seeing, thinking. All happens on its own.

Only way that makes a diff is if you can identify the powers that be. Without that, this question is just a gateway to nihilism.

Whether it is or isnt I find it to be related to self integrity. If you believe free will be be an illusion it’s harder to maintain a sense of integrity and a sense of self.
