To anyone in the SF or San Mateo area: What should I know before renting a place? Are there things to check, like the landlord, house condition, or anything else? I’ve never lived there before and would love some advice!

It has been a while since I rented in the bay area (10 years) but one thing I ran into is that it's rare to get the security deposit back (they'll make up reasons of why they have to spend it, make sure to document the state of your apt with photos and video the day you move in). One trick is when you give notice, you can try to factor the security deposit into your final payment. Also you're likely to be fairly car dependent (with many very few exceptions in some parts of SF), so assume you'll have to get a car.

Happy to give you a sense check of the SF neighborhood before you rent the place. Neighborhoods vary significantly in terms of safety

I love walking everywhere. My happiness went up significantly after moving from a bay area neighborhood where I had to drive everywhere to Nopa (North of Panhandle). I hope Nopa is still the quiet neighborhood with tons of cafes and casual food on Divisidero Street. There were many weeks were I didn't leave the 15 min walking radius of that neighborhood since it had everything I needed. It's also a 15 min car/bus ride downtown or to Ocean beach. Will DM you my favorite membership tea cafe there too.
