When I first started working in Japan, I was so scared of making mistakes. I was always nervous and tried to control everything around me. I copied how my coworkers dressed and behaved, just trying to fit in. But no matter what I did, I realized I would never fully fit in. The business culture was just so different from what I was used to... My way of thinking about work didn’t match theirs. Understanding the company hierarchy and how important relationships were was a big adjustment.

For example, I would spend hours finding the cheapest, most efficient supplier and show it to my boss, but he would ignore it. He’d always say, “In Japan, we value long-term relationships with suppliers and don’t cut ties with them, even if their costs are higher.” I would consider this crazy but I had to accept and work around their business culture rather than changing or challenging their system. Working in different cultures has taught me so much about solving problems in new ways. If you ever get the chance, travel and work abroad—it’s an amazing way to grow, both at work and personal life.
