I think the difference, at least for me, is that hard work for a pointless goal you don't care about = burnout. It's less about the work effort put in and more about the result of the work being completely meaningless that leads to burnout. Which should be a sign it's time to find a different place to put that effort

That’s such a fair point! Having your work matter to you makes a massive difference. I’d likely suffer instant burnout working for any major company
