The UAE deserves more study. It is technocapitalist. And a top location for global investors. It’s truly a nation of immigrants. Less than 15% Emirati, >85% foreign. It’s in hypergrowth. From 75k to ~10M people in 75 years. It’s like a Mars colony. Built a metropolis from nothing. Very impressive place.

The simple way to understand it imo: - Oil gave the region wealth - Monarchy used wealth to maintain ruling legitimacy (by ensuring the small population of nationals are well looked after) - Monarchy used wealth and legitimacy to make top down smart, long term investments (in a way a founder-led company might) - Many of these investments are now paying off.

Having spent the last year in #Dubai supporting the growth of #DigitalAssets in the region, I can only speak to the talent, community and growth-mindset people in the region share, unique to any other region I’ve visited. #bullish on the #UAE

It is also taking an increasing role in the security affairs of East Africa, and not always in a good way. The UAE supported Ethiopia's atrocity-filled campaign to suppress the Tigrayan ethnic group and they backsl Hemedti's RSF in the current Sudanese Civil War, where support by outside actors only serves to prolong the conflict. The UAE is also the destination of the majority of the illicit trade in gold from the DRC and South Sudan...

I remember in the 90s people were laughing at their idea of building a big city on the desert. I have tons of respect for the sheikh who pushed it hard despite the criticism. Many people say it's because they had money from oil, but how many other OPEC countries achieved similar results?

I have married friends that live there. One of the things the wife got asked was "do you feel safe there?" because of the perception of the Middle East as treating women horribly. She replied that she feels safer walking around Dubai than back in Germany.

I understood there is some sense of law that isn’t as amenable as advertised, and, even though it’s a higher immigrant to native population, there are still hostilities towards some minorities. I will concede that I’ve only heard this, I haven’t seen this for myself.

Very impressive place if you don't care for silly concepts such as human rights, equity, freedom of expression, or, you know, planetary boundaries. Homosexuality being a crime punishable with prison, apostasy punishable by death, is a bit unpleasant, forced labour of 130k modern slaves a topic best to avoid at the foie grase stations of the grotesque hedonist pleasure domes housing the 1%ers . But of course that's all neglectable for hyper growth, spread amongst a few, randomly at birth assigned enjoyooors! Truly a great example for all of us, and, i agree, a great candidate for a mars colony. Their first realization of this was Emirates and building it out of from scratch into the industry standard. Then piggybacking on that to bring talent into the city. Great story.

One thing that does stop me from going to Dubai to have my affairs set up there is that I am not convinced one can expect a fair trial. Rule of law is not an issue until it becomes an unsolvable and personal.

It's really a mars colony. For me, a shit place in an unlivable area that offers great incentives currently (no taxes) which at least drove a lot of people & businesses there for now. I believe many individuals will pack up their things after a few years and I'm not sure whether the growth will be sustained & the incentives lead to meaningful developments that could attract new people, business long-term. At least they got a fighting chance. Pretty impressive - worth taking a look for many countries with "better" conditions.
