elites holding ‘luxury beliefs’ is nothing new, and is a necessary evil

why? elites have the time, resources, and often, political power and means of persuasion to be able to effect outcomes 

their distance from direct social impact is a feature not a bug

This is also why lobbying, in some forms, is essential and can serve noble causes. Those with stake in the game but little influence must convince those with no stake in the game but lots of influence.
