Riding the Whoosh bullet train from Jakarta to Bandung (88 mi / 142 km apart) at a top speed of 217 mph / 350 kph, making the journey a mere 36 mins. The project was partly funded and fully built by China under the Belt and Road initiative — a prime display of soft power projection across the region. China outbid Japan for the project, which came with a ticket price of $7.3B, and loaned $0.5B to Indonesia in a yuan-denominated arrangement. China is also building rail in Lao, Hungary, Ethiopia, etc.

The train is comfortable and silent, though it lacks WiFi. It’s just a bit unexpected to have such a bullet train there for some reason!
