It was on this day, 8 years ago that I was woken up by @thegrifft's call telling me that our creation, the DAO, was being drained. That started the most stressful summer of my life, with hacking, forking, counter-hacking. For better or for worse that summer changed ethereum forever.

That event has been such a defining moment for Ethereum ever since (and we still get FUD to this day for the decision to fork). I had some of my own ETH stuck in the DAO but was wary of forking precisely because of the long lasting implications. Also, I can’t believe it’s been eight years already! 1000 $DEGEN

It’s an iconic event but the FUD to me has always been so ridiculous. Forking based on social consensus is, in my mind, one of the greatest examples of decentralization. Not even the notion of what something should be can stop the will of its participants. If folks truly believed (beyond just FUD) that Ethereum Classic was the better place to be, then they would have just called it Ethereum and it’s what we would be using today. I wasn’t in the scene at the time and I acknowledge that in the moment, the stress of lost funds etc, would have taken a toll on rationality, but I hope I would have come to the same conclusion. Ethereum, and decentralized software projects, are better for the use of hard forks. Sorry, Bitcoin.
