Assange was charged for publishing on Wikileaks several classified U.S. military secrets, including in 2010 a video taken from a U.S. helicopter attack in Baghdad that showed the killing of civilians. The video had been given to Assange by army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning, who was also sentenced to prison.

Snowden was charged with espionage for blowing the whistle through the press in 2013 on several global surveillance programs / dragnets run by the "Five Eyes" (US/UK/CA/AU/NZ) and other Western intelligence agencies including PRISM (direct government access to the servers of Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, AOL, Skype, YouTube, and Apple).
