As a non-American, I don’t quite get the fascination for filibustering. Yes, some guy (doesn’t matter which side of the aisle he’s from — this cast is apolitical) stood talking for 25 hours and five minutes. Yes, he beat the previous record by 47 minutes. No, he did not go to the bathroom, nor did he eat nor drink. The media are celebrating this as a “physical and mental feat that required stamina and willpower”, as if this was the Olympics. Except that it’s not a sport, it’s just a performative stunt that further trivializes politics and turns them into a farce, at a time when we need adults in the room more than ever. No wonder the electorate feels disconnected and numb.

I’m prepared to give the US the benefit of the doubt on this one. Each country has its own political culture, idiosyncrasies. It is not a universal truth that politics should be practised a certain way. It can be admirable to desire better, but that desire has to account for the reasons things are as they are today. Chesterton’s Fence etc.

As an American, I don’t quite get the fascination for filibustering. Then again, thinking back to 8th grade Civics class, we had a week of “mock congress”. When Eric White started filibustering, everyone laughed a lot and the whole class was suddenly engaged (whereas before it was boring). Perhaps some strange cultural quirk…

The last person who did it, tried to filibuster the civil rights act. Cory Booker, black guy, dem, diverse. Beat him out. While I get what you’re saying, the comparison is striking, and meaningful

I don’t get it. It’s stalling decision making and gives credibility to adding meaningless fluff. Now if there are two adults from different side of the political spectrum having a debate for 25 hours and 5 minutes without shouting, insulting or interrupting each other that would be a feat celebrating.

It’s usually done — Or threatened— as a tactic to prevent a bill from coming to a vote (prevent a cloture vote specifically). If you hold the floor, the vote can’t be called & it can be a last minute persuasion device as well. Sen Booker’s was more of a peaceful protest so not the usual filibuster.

It's literally a waste of everyone's time. The Dems could have gotten rid of it several years ago. They didn't take the chance. Maybe it will get removed now that the Dems are using it 😆

Jimmy Stewart made it a thing synonymous with the power of the common man a few generations back in Mr Smith Goes to Washington. Definitely performative and impotent in this day and age if it ever was truly important civically.

They stopped requiring an actual speech a while ago. Booker’s thing was performance. Now it’s just 60 votes instead of 51 to move a major piece of legislation forward. It’s a feature not a bug.

Agreed. Yet, does it signal a type of commitment people might want in a leader?

agree but enough people will laude it for it to matter. breaking the record was meant as a statement itself it is impressive from the perspective of "this guy really believes what he's saying"

The fact that media covers this like a sporting event instead of a legislative failure says everything about modern politics.

All of politics is performative in a capitalist system. you have absolutely ZERO representation, zero say on what's going on. Everything both parties are doing is massively unpopular amongst the general voting public, but they do it anyways. That's why we have to protest and march. Otherwise we could just vote and make this clown show go away, but it doesn't work like that

Is weird yeah, but in this case no bill was blocked so was just purely performative.

Filibuster or not politics is a farce everywhere, there's no democracy left. Think about it, a majority of republicans want to tax the rich more and you never see that happening. There are a lot of issues where the population agrees over 80/100 and they are simply ignored. To believe there's any government left that cares about the majority of its citizens, is laughable.
