there's this idea that you should lie to the student at first so they can get the basic idea, and then build up to the more accurate thing. This is bullshit. It's so much more understandable to say, "Here's what we're going to get to, but let's start with a simplified version..." Or to say, "Here's the history of..."

Agreed. I’m against the principle of infantilizing students, whether in pedagogy or andragogy. If you use a wrong metaphor, at least say it’s wrong & why. I enjoy 3blue1brown (Grant Sanderson)’s videos on higher math, for instance, because he does that really well and never insults the intelligence of the viewer

That lying-through-unstated-oversimplification has also led to the dissemination of completely wrong ideas about (for example) quantum mechanics, where people imagine zombie cats in boxes
