My brother works for the LA County Fire Department and sent me some pictures and videos from the Palisades fire. He says he’s never seen anything like it. Entire neighborhoods burned to ashes. My family is well South of the fires, but really hurting for my friends and colleagues who live in the impacted areas. 😢

I’m honestly shocked by the magnitude of this disaster and how quickly it got out of hand. Wildfires are an unavoidable fact of life and have been for millennia. So are strong winds. I’ve lived in places where fires were a major concern, and clearing out the vegetation around homes and creating firebreaks through wooded areas was mandatory there. It boggles my mind that this could happen that entire neighborhoods just disappeared in the US’ second largest city. I was looking at satellite photos yesterday and it looked like a tactical nuke had gone off.

I don’t get the impression that the state did everything it could to prevent or mitigate a situation like this. But it also sounds like it was a perfect storm of factors all coming together at once. Basically worst case scenarios playing out in real time. It’s very sad.
