Interestingly, I knew of the evaporative cooling of group beliefs from a 2007 Yudkowsky post about cults: when they fail in their predictions, the most reasonable members leave first, leaving behind those less capable of critical thinking, thus reinforcing the cult in a feedback loop. Which reminds of the joke that alcohol kills your weakest brain cells first, and thus makes you sharper

Something similar could be a great alternative to the spam labels (which effectively are a form of social gating), but it might be very tricky to implement.
