When people say they are building a web3 product to let people "monetize their data" 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩 https://twitter.com/nikitabier/status/1729895393712832826

What a weirdly authoritative tone in this tweet when counterexamples abound. I purchase vast amounts of mobile user geolocation data to track where people live and roam. There’s an entire industry of freemium apps that makes money not from the mindless entertainment they offer but from selling their users’ data.

And those data are hugely valuable to figure out people’s behaviors. The tweet seems to be referring to static data that is indeed commoditized and not worth much. But dynamic data that reveal new micro habits, patterns, and trends are very valuable, and that’s why a cottage industry has risen to collect them.

You don’t even need to go far to bring solid examples to the table: automotive companies have build a vast amounts of data pipelines specifically to sell to those who want to buy it. Anonymised, statistically significant, and reliable; perfect for crunching into consumer behaviour models and overbearing governments.
