Is Airplane mode name still applicable? 

Last few flights I don’t believe they asked us to turn off our phones. 

Did a law change or something?

In the US, the FCC (with the FAA’s support) still requires airplane mode to be on while airborne (see section 9 of link below).

I haven’t flown within the US lately, but my last few flights around the world, the airlines still did recommend switching to airplane mode but did not enforce it like they used to (by having the crew walk by and check).

It’s generally agreed that it’s not a safety concern
