Got a new work laptop: 13th Gen Intel Core i7 with 10 cores, 32 GB RAM, SSD. Also, Windows 11 Enterprise. That machine is incredibly slow — to boot, to open apps, to do anything really. Over the last 30 years we’ve progressed CPU clock rate, RAM latency, and SSD performance to insane levels. We all have computers that are multiple times more performant than a Cray of yore. And yet the awful pile of steaming bloatware that is Windows and friends renders even modern mid-range machines aggravating to use, and not better than the user experience from the past three decades. It feels like the headroom provided by leaps in hardware is being completely canceled by a lazy lack of optimization of the tech-debt-ridden software stack /rant

ive heard of a windows flavor that is completely debloated, but it's unofficial 3rd party. but what's the point? linux or os x will do the job.

One of the reason why I use terminal apps over GUI apps is how slow graphical user interfaces are. I can’t stand input latency higher than 40ms

My guess: anti-malware and intrusion detection. Corporate laptops are super paranoid in the face of ransomware and cyber espionage being so commonplace these days.

Often slowness is the os and/apps phoning home. OneDrive also tries to keep a constant connection and could be uploading files to the cloud.

bloatware aside, it just baffles me that it's been decades but windows machine manufacturers are still missing the memo about tuning 400$farther

I feel such an irrational anger whenever I use a Windows laptop. Desktops are ok. The quality of life gap is huge between a macbook pro and even high end windows laptop. The fans and heat dissipation piss me off so much. Thank you for this rant. You are not alone.

100% - my work laptop is a dell with 7 cores, ssd, and 32g ram and it can’t do multi-tasking at all. Build a front end and back end at the same time? Forget it. Try to merge a git pull and do anything else? Forget it. Even trusting that the machine is compiling apps is not always reliable. MS should be fined for the amount of time people collectively spend pandering to their bloatware. Okay, I’m done, and I feel better. Serenity now.. 🙏🏻

Wasn't the whole idea of windows 11 requiring specific hardware precisely to make it as fast as apple products that have always had dedicated chips?
