super app story. the company i worked for invested in wechat early and became Tencent’s biggest shareholder. after wechat’s success in China we tried to replicate the model in South Africa. spending millions to grow the app. ultimately it was a massive failure as we were unable to grow and retain users when the marketing spend and rewards ran out. turns out in most markets people just wanted a simple app that does one thing really well. go figure.
