gm fellow casters. For the engineers out there, if given the choice between a take-home exercise and a live coding interview, which would you choose?

Take home 100%. It depends on your personal strengths but I think the take home is much more reflective of what work will be like + you get time to think through things thoroughly. Live takes less time but its more of a performance and favors a completely diff skillset imo

As a follow-up, would having to do a live coding interview make you decide not to proceed with an interview process? I ask because I'm seeing candidates choose the take-home option and then not complete it so I'm considering getting rid of the option.

It's fairly industry standard so many will expect it and be okay with it. I think as the person hiring you just have to be careful about how you evaluate, it can be easy to be influenced live by things that don't necessarily correlate with being good at the job

A previous company would do live coding where they asked the candidate to bring in their own project and add something to it vs do a new prompt. That seemed to make people more comfortable + gave insight into how they approach projects and if they could self-direct
