Hero. And while it wasn’t anywhere near as extreme as Iran, I grew up in a pretty repressive religious cult as well w prescribed gender roles that I hated, & strict rules around what I could & could not wear & what I could & could not do, in life, in general. I dreamed of being a boy bc they were afforded so much more freedom, even though they were expected to be in school 6 days a week from dawn until nightime.. Music & books were also restricted to what was ‘allowed’. I hated it all & rebelled my whole life until I was of an age where I could actually leave. Which I know is the difference.. I was able to leave.. & I did, after I divorced my ex-husband when I was 20 years old & left him on a mountain top in a glorified trailer park surrounded by a barbed wire fence, in a different middle eastern country.

No no I don’t want to make it more than it is! I didn’t grow up in the Middle East. Only lived there for 3 years 😅 8 months of which I was married & then I left. I was fortunate I was able to leave before I had any kids w him. And very fortunate my parents actually supported me leaving him. I grew up extremely orthodox Jewish in a Hasidic sect but even though it was awful, I still grew up in CA, USA & had the freedom to wear short sleeve shirts and short socks, listen to the music I wanted to on the radio, read the books I wanted to at the library & watch movies at the theater as long as my parents/teachers/community didn’t see me. & even if they did, I’d get in big trouble but it’s not like any police would beat me or anything like hijab in Iran. & I had the freedom to leave my ex-husband & move to NY & reinvent myself as I wanted to. I dearly wish the same opportunity for you from the very bottom of my heart. Please come visit me in CA someday. We’ll go see all the rap concerts you want!!
