The first computer virus, called "Creeper," was created in 1971. It spread through the ARPANET (a precursor to the internet) and displayed the message "I'm the creeper, catch me if you can!" It wasn't malicious, just an experimental program, and it was eventually countered by the first antivirus program, "Reaper."
