One meta-note on the situation, is that in my timeline I have seen exactly zero non-western people defending Durov's arrest, but quite a few western people. Definitely don't want to say that they don't exist (after all, my timeline is biased just like anyone's), just this is what my sample is so far. IMO this is another example of the decoupling of liberalism and westernism that https://x.com/MacaesBruno often talks about.

What I've seen from any discussion about this, is that it is singularly measured against a dimension of freedom of speech. I don't think that does justice to the complexity of this matter. Sure, freedom of speech is important, but certainly not the only important freedom. Due to an over-focus on our freedom to be able to say whatever we want, we forget about other freedoms. We don't live in individual bubbles, we live in societies, and in these societies, we need to find a way to safeguard that "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights" as the Universal Declaration of Human rights puts it. Arresting Durov might not be the way, but I don't think that it's unfair to say that the over-focus on freedom of speech is currently undermining other freedoms, such as "the right to life, liberty and security of person" (article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights) too often.

are you able to explain an example of where freedom of speech is less important than another freedom? Specifically I’m interested if there’s any example where it’s a direct infringement (not indirect such as it “it could lead to”)

I think there were many examples, but let's try to find a not so polarising one. In The Netherlands not long ago, this person was spreading lieas about a satanic sect raping children in a small town. They even went so far as to name actual graves of children. Thisn ead to people ruining these graves which hurt the families. A doctor who was named in these lies was threathened and needed police protecion. How is it fair that we allow someone under the guise of freedom of speech to negatively impact so many lives of totally innocent people?

I wonder if we just need to societally develop better and more rapid antibodies to false and unverifiable information instead of working the slippery slope of infringement of free speech vectors given the modern digital information ecology. Seems like never ending wack-a-mole game ripe with vectors for corruption and abuse when we give institutions power to limit speech and/or back doors to law enforcement to police it. When we zoom out to how technological advances have affected meme space overtime, it feels as though any Luddite action that attempted to control was futile and simply delayed society developing anti-fragility to the new propagation tech. Existing laws should be sufficient in the interim combined w/ increased policing for those directly perpetrating violence. I’d rather see a law passed that centralized tech platforms are required to give me direct access to levers on the algorithm that controls my feed over policing raw speech/access.
