Where I worked in China as one of the first westerners to do so the locomotives ran on soft coal and common citizens would scavenge coal crumbs from the trackbed using chopsticks. Also, they would hunt sea gulls for food. There were no cars, only lots of people on 'Flying Pigeons'. Things sure have changed a lot.
