I turned off notifications because I received too many. This has made me forget that I have the app on the phone and use it less. I would like to know if this can be tweaked within the app.

Yes! You can go to Profile -> Settings -> Notifications and then select those categories you’re interested to be notified about. Or you can mute all activity of selected user by muting them in their profiles. May need more flexibility here, let me know if you think we’re missing something here!
