Even from a distance, watching an orca in the mist feels like time stands still. The world goes quiet, and all that matters is this moment. Not every photo needs to be a close-up to capture the magicβ€”sometimes, the beauty is in the space between.

ITAP of Cannon Beach, Oregon: where the weather’s got a serious flair for drama. One moment, blue skies and sunshine. Thirty minutes later, dark clouds and an ominous vibe. The Oregon coast doesn’t do boring!

Caught this young orca showing off some serious attitude with tail slaps! He really had something to say - probably "look at me, look at me!" The ocean's full of personality, and this guy was stealing the show. Photographed in Blackfish Sound, British Columbia.

Goodbye Vancouver Island! A few phone photos of Victoria from the Coho Ferry as we leave for Port Angeles to begin our snowbird season. There are still more stories and photos from this summer on the boat still to come!

A pod of orca slipping through the fog in Blackfish Sound, British Columbia. There’s something about seeing these giants in the mist that feels almost otherworldly, like a secret whispered by the ocean itself.

**Sea Otter Week** Found a raft of sea otters having the ultimate crab feast. They’re like, β€œTable for 200? No problem!” Watching them crack open crabs with pure joyβ€”maybe these guys are my spirit animals!

Sea Otter Week: A Tale of Recovery Welcome to Sea Otter Week, where today, we explore how sea otters reclaimed their coastal homes: Near Extinction: By the early 20th century, sea otters were nearly extinct along the West Coast due to the fur trade. Their populations dwindled to less than 2,000 worldwide Recovery Begins:
Alaska to British Columbia: In the 1960s and 70s, efforts began to repopulate areas. In 1969, 89 sea otters were translocated from Alaska to Vancouver Island, British Columbia. This initiative marked the start of their recovery in Canadian waters. From BC to Oregon: Following the success in BC, in 1970, sea otters from Vancouver Island were moved to the Oregon Coast. A Conservation Milestone: These translocations were pioneering efforts in wildlife conservation, demonstrating that with human intervention, species could be brought back from the brink Tomorrow we’ll talk about why this reintroduction of sea otters is so important to the ecosystem.

Sea Otter Week: The Marvel of Their Fur Welcome to Sea Otter Week! Today, let’s explore why their fur is not just a coat but a masterpiece of survival: - Densely Packed: Sea otters possess the densest fur of any mammal, with up to 1 million hairs per square centimetre. This dense fur provides insulation vital for surviving in cold waters - Two-Layer Warmth: Their fur consists of two layers: a dense undercoat trapped by longer guard hairs. This double-layered system traps air, which is warmed by their body heat, keeping them insulated. - Grooming for Life: Sea otters spend a significant part of their day grooming. This isn't vanity; it's survival. Grooming ensures their fur remains waterproof and insulates them against the cold ocean. - A Conservation Story: Historically hunted for this luxurious fur, sea otters faced near extinction. More on that tomorrow! Imagine the dedication to personal care not for vanity but for survival.
