Thing is, I can easily buy it for him BUT it’s far more complex. People like Simba send pretty much every penny they earn back home to support their big families, for him it’s in Congo. So, for him it’s incomprehensible to spend this amount of money on ticket, instead of putting it into practical use. Do you see what I mean? The ticket costs 300 rand ($16) and I rather give him that money as a symbolic ticket and leave him freedom to do with it what HE sees as important. (I don’t know if I managed to explain it well) 😘😘😘😘

His story makes me sad. I want to buy him tickets to a show.

I met Simba, a Congolese immigrant, last year. He assists with parking and watches over the cars at the tidal pool where I go for my daily cold swims. With his kind smile and gentle presence, I often find myself stopping for little conversations with him.

In the portrait I took this evening, Simba stands in front of the Theater on the Bay, a popular venue just across the road , where he also helps with parking every evening. A few weeks ago, he proudly told me I must go see the current show, Black Coffee by Agatha Christie, because it features some of his favorite actors.

I was touched and a little surprised by how well he knew all the actors, and yes, I listened to his advice and went to see the play.

Today, to my sadness - though not entirely to my surprise - I learned from Simba that he has never actually seen a show inside that theater himself.
