Luckson Nkhomani, a 38-year-old Malawian gardener residing in the suburbs of Cape Town, comes from a rich lineage of sangomas, indigenous healers of the southern African continent. Contrary to centuries-old misinterpretations and uninformed judgments from the Western perspective, being a sangoma entails cultivating a profound connection and symbiotic relationship with the natural world.

When Luckson held a seemingly aggressive and strong rooster, it was as though the creature, under his care, entered a state akin to hypnosis—transforming into a remarkably calm and gentle being. I aim to honor and celebrate through these portraits the depth and profound wisdom embedded in the indigenous ancestral knowledge that has persisted for centuries.
