In western Iceland, about 55 kilometers from the town of Borgarnes, lies one of the most picturesque and unusual waterfalls in the world — Hraunfossar. Essentially, it is a chain of countless waterfalls stretching for about 900 meters. Locals pronounce its name as Hraunfossar, which translates to "Lava Waterfalls." The name reflects its unique origin — the waterfalls were formed following an ancient volcanic eruption beneath one of Iceland’s largest glaciers, Langjökull. The Hvítá River, which originates from the glacier, carved its way along the edge of the hardened lava flow. Since the lava rock is porous, the water easily seeped into it, traveling underground until it hit an impermeable layer of basalt. After flowing underground for nearly a kilometer, the river reemerges, creating countless beautiful waterfalls. This kind of natural phenomenon is quite rare, which is why in 1987 the Icelandic government placed the area under protection.
