Twitter fracturing into Farcaster (web3), Mastodon (serious), Poast (shitposting), Post (politics), and Truth Social (religion, conspiracy theories, white nationalism) is probably a good thing.

These are divisive things incompatible with broadcast posting.

i.e. they are parts of your identity that you might not want to associate with your *only* identity. 

Twitter’s broadcast model where you follow people creates evolutionary pressure for people to adopt a singular identity. Or fracture it into alts. And that isn’t healthy.

Eventually, through some kind of random walk, you develop an identity that is molded by what your followers prefer, because should you post something that isn’t aligned with what they prefer, it doesn’t get heard anyway.

So you go off in search of an alt social platform. Or create an alt.

Worse than not getting heard, you might even be attacked for that one small facet of your identity (that from your follower’s perspective, isn’t what they’re following you for).

That creates a perverse relationship where posters have to perform an identity for their followers.

There’s an asymmetry between the person who posts (who has multiple facets of their identity), and the person who follows them (who is interested in maybe one facet, at most).

All things being equal, the follower’s preferences win out, because they dictate whether the poster gets heard.
