They didn't fly to the moon actually. They flew around the Earth on its orbit 17 times and then got back safely. The name isn't 'squirrel' either even thou its omonimous to word 'belka' in Russian I bet they called Belka after her white appearance (белая) to rhyme with the other dogs name Strelka which took her name from that peculiar forehead coat color shapes
