I think that there must be some universal law that says every Acid Jazz compilation must have Fredrick Lies Still by Galliano on it. Great track.

Back in 1997 I was bemused by the choice of Roni Size’s ‘New Forms’ over ‘OK Computer’ by Radiohead in the Mercury Music Prize. 25 years later I think they made the right call.

Examples: - Lots of people all in the same cell so available bandwidth is variable - Switching between networks and going from 5G to 3G when crossing the street - Partial internet connectivity due to traffic shaping

Both use cases throw up test cases that a lot of mobile applications don't account for and don't handle very well.

It is somewhat sad that you get better internet connectivity on a plane in the middle of the Atlantic than you do in some parts of London.

Lately I've been rebuilding a blog in Hugo and have really enjoyed the experience. Some learning curve with the templating language but otherwise it's been a fairly smooth adventure.

Worked on getting 19+ years of data out of Day One and into Obsidian. Modified a Python script to do the heavy lifting, and after an hour got 95% of the way there. The remaining 5% I'll have to do manually.

Entropy hits Gatsby projects hard unless you stay on top of keeping dependencies up to date. And even then major version updates usually require extra time to deal with due to the deprecations. It’s a bit of a hamster wheel at times.

I would recommend a maxed out MacBook Air. It should easily cover all the above and more.

This matches my experience with Kubernetes. It’s great for handling stateless workloads but running anything with state is a pain and needs to be carefully thought out.

I used Rails 7 for a project over the summer and it does hit the sweet spot of providing 95% of the stuff you need to run a project out of the box. It also scales up much further than people think it does making it perfect for small and even medium sized projects.

All of the above is supported out of the box with modern form validation HTML. No JavaScript required. Mark the required fields as `required`, add a `min` length to the name. Add the appropriate patterns to email and phone inputs. The form submit button will not enable unless all the validation rules pass. Use CSS to style as needed.

The success of Pair Programming as a learning tool depends on the attitudes and personalities of the participants. The understanding that the learning is supposed to go both ways is key to success. Given circumstances where it does pay off are limited, it should be used sparingly.

Netscape was released 30 years ago today. I remember when it dropped and how much of a quantum leap it was over Mosaic.

I spent the day at the Javascript coal face trying to resolve a hydration error with a React component. Using a framework that doesn't clearly delineate what Javascript is run at build time and what Javascript being run on the client is IMHO a recipe for disaster. There is always a fine line between genius and stupid. When your framework tries to be clever it usually ends up at the latter.

According to Apple Books I've read 57 books so far this year. A good mix of titles with only a third being re-reads. I think the end of year total will end up between 60-70. #books
